Christmas Stockings

Our Christmas Stockings are finally finished and they look amazing!
Here are some photos of us hard at work...

We created our own stencils of christmas patterns and designs that we wanted on our stocking.

We placed our stencil underneath the fabric and followed the outline using a special paste made up of flour and water.

We painted our stockings using bright colours, being very careful to stay within the lines.

We went out side and peeled off the hardened paste. This left a clear white outline around each of our designs.

A few of our finished products!

Diwali Candles

Have a look at these beautiful candles we created for Diwali! We made them from salt dough and placed a tea light candle inside. We had so much fun painting and decorating them with jewels and glitter. We are so proud of how they turned out!

Japanese Blossoms

Last Friday we had lots of fun creating Japanese Blossoms (Thanks Room 11 for the great idea!)
We firstly had to put a blob of dye on our piece of paper and blow really hard through a straw to spread the dye out over the paper to look like branches. We then made some different shades of pink using the white and pink paint. We had lots of fun finger painting the blossoms onto the branches.
Have a look at these photos of us creating our beautiful Japanese Blossoms...

Have a look at our amazing koru designs!
For this unit we learnt about warm and cool colours and  created a contrast between our koru and our background. We also learnt how to blend colours.
We had lots of fun creating these korus and are so proud of how they turned out.

Tapa Art

As part of our unit on cultural diversity we are looking at art from different cultures.
For the past couple of weeks we have been learning about Tapa. Tapa is a barkcloth made in the islands of the pacific ocean such as Tonga, Samoa and Fiji. The Tapa Cloth is very important to these cultures.
Here is a you tube clip of how Tapa is made...

We had a go at making our own tapa cloth!
Firstly we practised a range of traditional tapa patterns and then we had a go at creating some of our own designs. We chose our favourite 3 designs to use on our tapa cloth. We penciled our design onto some brown paper and then we used vivid to go over the pattern. We had to make sure that we stayed in the lines and made our patterns nice and bold! We then used brown dye to dye the paper. The fun part was scrunching up our artwork into a tight ball and opening it back up - this gave it the tapa cloth effect.
We are very proud of our tapa art!

Poi

This term as part of our inquiry topic on cultural diversity we have been looking at aspects of the Maori culture. We decided to learn a poi song and dance. For the past couple of weeks during art we have been making our own poi.

Here is what we did...

Firstly we twisted two pieces of wool together with our partner. We had to keep twisting until the wool was nice and tight.

Some of us turned the wool into a bar and enjoyed a game of limbo!

We then had to bring the two ends of the wool together to make the string thicker. We enjoyed watching the two sides spiral together. We then tied the two ends in a knot.

Once we had made the string we needed to make the top of the poi. We did this by pushing some stuffing through a hole in the top of our string.

Once we had placed the stuffing through the string we had to wrap a plastic bag around the string and stuffing.

Miss Fisher then cello-taped around the bottom of the poi and cut off the extra plastic bag.

We love playing with our pois!

Sunflower Art

Here is a glimpse of some of our beautiful sunflowers that we painted! We tried really hard to use up all the white space and paint carefully within the lines.
We did such a good job!

Masks

Room 12 LOVE art! We had so much creating masks out of hessian. Firstly we made a clay mask making sure that our features really popped out. We then wrapped our masks in glad wrap and moulded PVA covered hessian to our mask. We had to count to 100 while holding the hessian to the mask to make sure that it stayed in place. Our hands got really tired! Once the hessian had dried and hardened we took it off the clay mask and decorated it. We had lots of fun choosing paints and materials to decorate our mask.

Thank you Mrs Strang for this cool idea and for all your help!

Here are some photos of our masks.
Look at how creative we are!

Foam Painting

On Friday we did a foam painting language experience.
We had lots of fun mixing the primary colours and making cool patterns and designs. The foam felt gooey and slimy!

Have a read of some of our foam painting recounts.
We tried really hard to add lots of detail and descriptive language!

Squirt! The foam came onto my piece of paper. The foam was so squishy. Room 12 made foam paintings. We made them because we were learning about the primary colours. Next we spread the foam onto the newspaper. After that I got a chopstick and I spread it over the foam, it looked like a fluffy cloud on the paper. It was so so so amazing. After that I got the primary colours from Miss Fisher and then I put them on the foam and mixed them. It was like a rainbow and one part was like a wave. Next I got a piece of paper and put it on the foam and then I wrote my name on it. After that I got my ruler and shaved off all the foam. I was happy.

Prisha
Splat! I felt the foam on my piece of paper. The foam was squishy and puffy. The foam  was slimy. We did foam painting because we wanted to learn about the primary colours. We did it on Friday but Kyza and Ben did it on Tuesday. First we put the foam on the newspaper. Next we put a drop of each of the primary colours on the foam. After that we swirled the primary colours and then we saw some other colours like green, orange, purple and brown. Finally we used a ruler to scrape the rest of the foam colours off. We saw a lovely pattern. The pattern was a swirly and colourful pattern. I loved my colourful and beautiful pattern. I made a fantastic picture.

Splat! The foam sprayed on my paper so fast that it scared me. We did it in Room 12. We did foam painting because we wanted to learn about the primary colours. We did it on a sunny friday afternoon. We had a piece of newspaper. We put it on the table and then we put foam on top of it. After that we put the primary colours onto the foam. The primary colours are red, yellow and blue. Once we had done that we got a piece of paper and gently pressed it onto the foam. We gently pulled it up and we saw a fantastic, pretty pattern. Miss Fisher took a photo of us holding our pictures. I felt fabulous!

Ben
On Tuesday I did foam painting. I did it in my classroom. I did foam painting because I wanted to learn about the primary colours and it was awesome. Next I spread the foam on my newspaper. Secondly I put food colouring on it. The colours were blue, red and yellow. After that I got a chopstick and I swirled it all together. Once I had done that I got a piece of paper and pushed it gently on the coloured foam. When I pulled off the paper I saw a pattern.

On Friday we did foam painting in room 12. We did it because we are learning about the three primary colours and we did it in our classroom. We were so crazy and it was so yucky! We put the paper on top of the foam and we made lots of patterns. We gently pulled the paper up and we were excited because we had never done it before.
