We had a lovely visit to Room 18 last Friday to share our publishing books with them. Thank you for letting us visit Room 18 we had lots of fun :)

Key Facts

Have a look at the pic collages that the Dolphins and Octopuses created for their reading follow up activity.  

The Dolphins read an article called 'Dancing With Bees' and the Octopuses read a book about cats. 

They had to identify some key ideas from the text to include in their poster.

Fold a Flower

Yesterday the sharks read some instructions on how to fold a flower. They then had to carefully follow the instructions to create their own flower. 

Here is what they did...

They firstly cut some straight strips of coloured paper 7cm wide. They then folded the piece of paper to make a triangle and cut off the extra paper. 

They folded two of the triangles corners over to the other side of the triangle to make a pentagon shape.

After they had a made a whole lot of little pentagons they arranged them into a circle and glued them down onto a piece of card to make a flower.

Mum's New Shoes

As part of their reading follow up activity for the story 'Mum's New Shoes' the octopuses had to design a new pair of shoes for mum. They then had to create an advertisement for their shoes on pic collage.

Shark's Poems

Here are some of the Shark's poems they wrote as a reading follow up activity last week...

The octopuses have been working on reading with expression. Here is a video of Mischa reading an excerpt from the story 'Mr Whisper's Sore Ears'. 

She did a fantastic job adjusting her voice for each of the different characters.

Guide Dogs

After yesterdays visit from Leila we decided to research some more information about guide dogs.

We identified some key ideas and created a pic collage sharing our new learning... 

The Shark's Awesome Poems

Today the Sharks read a poem called 'Spiders'. 

They then had a go at writing their own poem about an insect of their choice. 
They did a wonderful job at making their poems rhyme!

Strawberries

Today the octopuses read a book about Strawberries. They then had to identify 5 key ideas from the text and create a pic collage. Their collage had to include a title, 5 key ideas, 5 photos and their name.

They did a wonderful job!

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Today the Sharks and a few of the Starfish used the app 'Puppet Pals' to create a puppet show of the story 

'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. 

They used lots of expression and did a fantastic job acting out each of the characters.

Grandpa's New Scooter

Today a few of the seahorses read the book 
‘Grandpa’s New Scooter’.

They then had to create a pic collage describing Grandpa’s scooter. They had to include a title, a picture of the scooter, 10 ideas describing the scooter, their name and photo.

The Shark's Awesome Poems

Today the sharks reading group read a poem from their junior journal called 'Down on the Farm'.

They then had a go at writing their own version of the poem. They tried really hard to use rhyming words and the correct poem structure. They did a really good job!

They published their poems on pic collage.

Takapu

Today the Starfish read an article about the takapu. 

They then had to identify some of the key points from the text and create a pic collage sharing their learning. 

Their pic collage needed to include a title, three photos, five facts about the takapu, their name and a photo of themselves. They also needed to make sure that their pic collage was visually appealing.  

They did a terrific job!

Gruffalo Character Descriptions

We have been writing character descriptions based on characters from books that we are reading. 
We had a go at making our own describe map and writing a description to go with it based on a character from the story 'The Gruffalo'. 

Meanies

Room 12 love using pic collage to share their learning. 

We have been using it lots during reading to create character descriptions of some of our favourite characters.
