Change

This term we have been looking at change. We have asked ourselves the question 'Can We Make Change Happen?'
We are doing lots of fun experiments with different foods to see whether or not we can change them by heating or cooling.

For our first experiment we asked the question:
Can we change a liquid into a solid?

Our hypothesis was that if we put water into the freezer it will turn into ice.

Method:

First we put some water into a tray. The water was cold and it moved a lot.

We then put the tray into the freezer and left it there overnight.

The next day we took the tray out of the freezer and the water had turned into ice. It was really cold and really hard.

We found that we CAN turn a liquid into a solid!

What is it that makes water freeze?
Room 12 did some investigating…
Everything is made up of little molecules. These molecules are always moving. As water gets colder their molecules start to slow down and expand. They join together to form a solid.

We then asked ourselves the question...
Can we turn a solid back into a liquid?

Our hypothesis was that if we put the ice cubes somewhere warm they will start to melt.

We put the ice cubes on a desk in the sun and they slowly began to melt and turn back into a liquid.

We found that we CAN change a solid into a liquid!

What is it that turns a solid to a liquid?
Room 12 did some more investigating…
As the molecules in the solid begin to heat up they start to move faster and separate from the other molecules.

Bucket Fillers

We have been reading the book 'Have You Filled a Bucket Today?' by Carol McLeod and looking at what it means to be a bucket filler and a bucket dipper.
In Room 12 we try really hard to ensure that we are always filling up each others buckets to make our classroom a happy learning place. But what exactly does this mean?....

Have a look at this short film we created explaining what it means to be a bucket filler :)

Masks

Room 12 LOVE art! We had so much creating masks out of hessian. Firstly we made a clay mask making sure that our features really popped out. We then wrapped our masks in glad wrap and moulded PVA covered hessian to our mask. We had to count to 100 while holding the hessian to the mask to make sure that it stayed in place. Our hands got really tired! Once the hessian had dried and hardened we took it off the clay mask and decorated it. We had lots of fun choosing paints and materials to decorate our mask.

Thank you Mrs Strang for this cool idea and for all your help!

Here are some photos of our masks.
Look at how creative we are!

Foam Painting

On Friday we did a foam painting language experience.
We had lots of fun mixing the primary colours and making cool patterns and designs. The foam felt gooey and slimy!

Have a read of some of our foam painting recounts.
We tried really hard to add lots of detail and descriptive language!

Anchal
Squirt! The foam came onto my piece of paper. The foam was so squishy. Room 12 made foam paintings. We made them because we were learning about the primary colours. Next we spread the foam onto the newspaper. After that I got a chopstick and I spread it over the foam, it looked like a fluffy cloud on the paper. It was so so so amazing. After that I got the primary colours from Miss Fisher and then I put them on the foam and mixed them. It was like a rainbow and one part was like a wave. Next I got a piece of paper and put it on the foam and then I wrote my name on it. After that I got my ruler and shaved off all the foam. I was happy.

Prisha
Splat! I felt the foam on my piece of paper. The foam was squishy and puffy. The foam  was slimy. We did foam painting because we wanted to learn about the primary colours. We did it on Friday but Kyza and Ben did it on Tuesday. First we put the foam on the newspaper. Next we put a drop of each of the primary colours on the foam. After that we swirled the primary colours and then we saw some other colours like green, orange, purple and brown. Finally we used a ruler to scrape the rest of the foam colours off. We saw a lovely pattern. The pattern was a swirly and colourful pattern. I loved my colourful and beautiful pattern. I made a fantastic picture.

Splat! The foam sprayed on my paper so fast that it scared me. We did it in Room 12. We did foam painting because we wanted to learn about the primary colours. We did it on a sunny friday afternoon. We had a piece of newspaper. We put it on the table and then we put foam on top of it. After that we put the primary colours onto the foam. The primary colours are red, yellow and blue. Once we had done that we got a piece of paper and gently pressed it onto the foam. We gently pulled it up and we saw a fantastic, pretty pattern. Miss Fisher took a photo of us holding our pictures. I felt fabulous!

Ben
On Tuesday I did foam painting. I did it in my classroom. I did foam painting because I wanted to learn about the primary colours and it was awesome. Next I spread the foam on my newspaper. Secondly I put food colouring on it. The colours were blue, red and yellow. After that I got a chopstick and I swirled it all together. Once I had done that I got a piece of paper and pushed it gently on the coloured foam. When I pulled off the paper I saw a pattern.

Joanna
On Friday we did foam painting in room 12. We did it because we are learning about the three primary colours and we did it in our classroom. We were so crazy and it was so yucky! We put the paper on top of the foam and we made lots of patterns. We gently pulled the paper up and we were excited because we had never done it before.

Swimming

Room 12 loves swimming! We go swimming once a week with Room 15 to build our water confidence.
We have been learning how to enter and exit the pool safely, submerge and blow bubbles, float like a starfish and glide on our front and back.

We wrote some recounts about our swimming experiences.
We have been working hard to start our stories with a
'hook sentence' so that the reader wants to read more.

Splash! Suddenly I felt the cool water bubbling around my feet. Miss Fisher took us to the swimming pool. My swimming side is the far side because I am a confident swimmer. Next we climbed into the pool. When I was waiting for everyone to come in the pool I had a little play around. Once everyone was in we did some kicking and floating like a starfish. After that we got out and we went into the stinky changing room. In the changing room I got changed and then got into line.

Splash! Suddenly I felt the cool bubbling water. We went swimming with Room 15. We go swimming so that we can learn how to be safe in the water. First we hopped in the cool pool and waited for people in the hot sun. Next everyone hopped into the pool. We then practiced kicking and our floating starfish. After that we practiced gliding. Finally we hopped out of the cool, bubbling water and we got changed into our uniform. We sat on the hot concrete and waited. We lined up, walked back to class and sat on the mat.

Rohan
Splash! I felt the cold water bubbling around my body. The water was refreshing. I felt excited. First we went into the stinky, yellow changing room. The changing room was as stinky as a skunk. We got changed and then went and sat down on the hard concrete and we waited and waited! I wondered how refreshing the swimming pool could be. After that Room 12 and Room 15 went inside the swimming pool. We had a little play around in the pool. We splashed each other and then we got into our groups with Miss Humphries and Miss Fisher. We did some floating starfish, practiced our kicking, blew some bubbles, submerged and practiced our gliding. Then we climbed out of the pool and went and got changed. I love swimming because the pool is refreshing. Sometimes I don't like the swimming pool because it is so so so so so hot! That is why I asked Miss Humphries if I could get out of the swimming pool but she said no.

Brianna
Yesterday Room 12 and Room 15 went to the swimming pool. We got into the stinky changing room and then we sat on the hot ground. The hot sun was shining on me. Then we got into the swimming pool and had a little play around. Then we had to blow bubbles and get a board. We swam with the board and we kicked with the board too. When it was time to get out of the pool we went into the changing room to get changed. We got out of the changing room and we sat on the ground and waited to go back to Room 12.

Meanies

Room 12 love using pic collage to share their learning.
We have been using it lots during reading to create character descriptions of some of our favourite characters.

Here are some of the pic collages we made describing the meanies from our shared story.

Citizenship

This term we have been looking at citizenship and what it means to be a good citizen. We have looked at different communities that we belong to and ways in which we contribute to those communities.
We created some pic collages showing ways that we demonstrate good citizenship here at Halsey Drive School...
